Kenya’s fisheries sector includes industrial and small-scale fishers, and produces fresh and processed fish for domestic and export markets. Yet, fisheries have experienced declines in both diversity and productivity due to poor management, and currently make a limited contribution to the country’s Gross Domestic Product. Improved fisheries management and policies could increase the sector’s contributions to Kenya’s economy and food security.

Fisheries are important to Tanzania’s economy, providing income, export revenues, and about 4 million jobs (about 35% of rural employment). Fish are also important to nutrition, providing about 22% of animal protein in the diet. Tanzania primarily produces wild fish in Lake Victoria – the world’s second-largest freshwater lake – and along its coast. Yet, due in part to harmful fishing practices, the sector’s growth is declining. There is an urgent need for management strategies that increase the sustainable use and natural productivity of Tanzania’s fisheries.

Chapter 4.3 of USAID's Biodiversity and Development Handbook is focused on the intersection of biodiversity and conservation with agriculture and livestock. Agriculture has a tremendous impact on biodiversity, both directly through land conversion and indirectly through ecosystem effect. Agriculture also includes the use of wild foods, such as fisheries. Chapter Four contains sections that are a primer on integration of biodiversity into key development sectors, including agriculture and livestock.

From April 27, 2011 through May 6, 2011 the Global FISH Alliance sent a team to Mozambique to map the context of the Pemba Bay fisheries and form a Working Group tasked with planning for a three day Whole‐ System‐in‐the‐Room (WSR) retreat. The purpose of this retreat is to gather key stakeholders working on issues related to fisheries development in Pemba Bay, enhance inter‐sector communications, and create collaborative work plans focused on creating a sustainable fishery and healthier eco‐system for Pemba Bay.

Global fisheries are in crisis: marine fisheries provide 15% of the animal protein consumed by humans, yet 80% of the world's fish stocks are either fully exploited, overexploited or have collapsed. Several international initiatives have sought to improve the management of marine fisheries, hoping to reduce the deleterious ecological and socioeconomic consequence of the crisis. Unfortunately, the extent to which countries are improving their management and whether such intervention ensures the sustainability of the fisheries remain unknown. Here, we surveyed 1,188 fisheries experts from every coastal country in the world for information about the effectiveness with which fisheries are being managed, and related those results to an index of the probable sustainability of reported catches. We show that the management of fisheries worldwide is lagging far behind international guidelines recommended to minimize the effects of overexploitation. Only a handful of countries have a robust scientific basis for management recommendations, and transparent and participatory processes to convert those recommendations into policy while also ensuring compliance with regulations. Our study also shows that the conversion of scientific advice into policy, through a participatory and transparent process, is at the core of achieving fisheries sustainability, regardless of other attributes of the fisheries. These results illustrate the benefits of participatory, transparent, and science-based management while highlighting the great vulnerability of the world's fisheries services.
