Biodiversity offsets are increasingly being used by business to compensate for the residual impacts of development and fulfill voluntary, financial or regulatory commitments. The relationship between biodiversity offsets and Protected Areas is an important practical issue. In many countries protected areas are severely underfunded, and seem to provide good targets for offset investments - a win-win approach for business, governments and conservation. However, offsets in parks could undermine key offsetting principles concerning additionality, comparability and permanence. This webinar, presented by Leon Bennun of The Biodiversity Consultancy, explores these issues and asks under what circumstances, and subject to what conditions, are protected area offsets appropriate and workable?
A brief viewpoint article on this topic authored by Leon Bennun and John Pilgrim was published in the journal Conservation Letters in advance of the World Parks Congress, and can be found here.
