The start-up of the AATF was funded by The Rockefeller Foundation, The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and The United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID). The African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) is a not-for-profit foundation that is designed to facilitate public-private partnerships for the access and delivery of appropriate technologies to the resource-poor smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. Its mission is food security and poverty reduction, and its structure and operations draw upon the best practices and resources of both the public and private sectors. In pursuing its mission, the AATF links the needs of resource-poor farmers with potential technological solutions; it acquires technologies from technology providers through royalty free licenses or agreements along with associated materials and know how for use on behalf of Africa's resource-poor farmers; it establishes partnerships with existing institutions to adapt agricultural technology to African circumstances; it ensures compliance with all laws associated with the use of these technologies; and it promotes the wide distribution of the technologies as appropriate.
